A survey and expert interviews were conducted to analyse the current situation of wood chip storage in Bavaria. Therefore dry matter losses and different storage effects on fuel quality were investigated. The aim of the project was to conduct extensive research regarding storage and quality assurance of wood chips. To assess these effects the research project "Quality preserving storage of wood chips" was carried out by the Technology and Support Centre in the Centre of Excellence for Renewable Resources (TFZ) and by the Bavarian State Institute of Forestry (LWF) over a period of 2.5 years. These effects may pose an economical risk for biomass producers, distributers and users. However, biological degradation processes during storage can cause high dry matter losses and a decline in fuel quality. As production and consumption of these fuels often occur at different times during the year, the storage of fresh wood chips is an important part of the fuel supply chain. Almost five million loose cubic meters of wood chips from forests are produced in Bavaria annually.
